We the undersigned appreciate the steps taken by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to gain access for humanitarian aid to be delivered to those affected by Cyclone Nargis which devastated Southern Burma on May 3, 2008.
We urge our government to: - Take a leading role to ensure that the humanitarian needs of the people of Burma are addressed urgently. We urge you to find ways that the world does not allow the suffering of the people of Burma to go unmet.
- Take a lead in the “UN Friends Group of Burma” to influence the United Nations to exercise its responsibility to protect citizens from life threatening situations through all means possible.
- To increase efforts to work with the governments of India, China, Thailand and Indonesia to persuade the Burmese authorities to permit relief supplies and aid workers into their country.
- To take a regional lead with ASEAN to develop a group of nations willing to work with the Burmese authorities to provide continuing access for immediate relief and long-term recovery and reconstruction.
